Overstitching the crested chain stitch

Ever since reading Stitch Magic by Beaney and Littlejohn earlier this year, I’ve been thinking about overstitching and layering. That’s a hard thing for me to do coming from a counted thread background, but I keep practicing. The crested chain stitch seems like an ideal stitch to practice with. Here are some of my experiments.

tstc32efan.png  There is a layer of buttonhole stitches sandwiched in the middle of this. I added French knots to supplement the knots of the crested chain at the point.

I did take time out for more familiar work “on grid”.

And here is my square. It probably should have been scrapped, but I had pity on it. While it seems rather useless, there are some lines that I like in it.
